Supermoto Mini Questions

Postby Shelby » Thu Oct 27, 2011 7:00 am

The recent AMP track day and all this talk about Supermoto wheels got me obsessing over the feasibility of a new project. Here's a few starter questions.

What the pros / cons of 12 inch vs 17 inch wheels?

For a Mini do you have to have a bracket to relocate the front brake?

What's better build a mini moto from scratch, or try to find and buy a mini already setup for supermoto?

Thanks all.

Supermoto Mini Questions

For 12inchers It's not suggested to exceed 70mph (no chance of running at bigger tracks with big bikes, hallett)
12s are perfect for warren though, quick turn in and good feel. Might have better acceleration than 17s for weight and diameter, but gearing might offset it. You can get the Dunlop TT92s, they look like they Stick good.

17s, you can run in the CMRA race classes, and with bigger bikes, higher top speed.

Look for a bike with inverted forks and disk brakes stock. This will help the greatest with your conversion.

Yz85, kx100, cr85, etc, most the MX bikes.

I bought my 80 cheap with a blown head and prob have about 1000 in it total, but i sleeved with a wiseco piston, that's where most the $ went.

I'll have to put up my build progress on it.

you can get nice good running 80cc/100cc bike for about $600 and up I went with the 12" wheels cuz of price and make the bike sit lower. I got the set of 12"s for $200 that came with tires, wheels, 39t gear brake roters. the 17" wheels I was looking at over $1k to get it set up on them. The AMP track is best for small bikes your max speed out there might get up to 55mph or 60mph. I would not want to run my KX 100 or TTR 125 on a track like hallett. On my 12"s all I had to do to make them fit was make spacers and take off the fork covers.
