Fall Colors?

Postby Black Eye » Thu Oct 10, 2013 11:12 am

Can anyone advise if the fall colors have arrived? Are they in full bloom of things or do I still have a couple of weeks to see the sea of oranges/reds? Specifically the Jasper - Ark Grand Canyon Area. Looking to come up one more time before the years up if possible, but wanna show the wife and kids the fall foilage at its peak. Thanks

PS: If someone rides this weekend and gets a chance to take a scenery shot (anywhere, does not have to be near jasper) it would be much appreciated so I can gauge where the colors are for the moment.

I'd say another 10 or 12 days. I was up Lower 123 camping Friday/Saturday and nothing is showing there yet. All still green. Good rule of thumb is first week in November for primo color.

Thanks guys much appreciated.

Quick route/touring question. I have ridden Talimena before and im sure its the superior road/route.

However regarding dropping into Mena, AR anyone experience Hwy 270 on the north side of Talimena / hwy 8 on the south side? Any input?

Not a great picture, but it does show there's not much changing.

We came up on a HUGE black bear on lower 123 a couple weeks ago. Rounded a corner and it was just walking down the center of the road, lol. Didn't think of it at the moment, but it could have very easily turned around and we'd been screwed, lol. I had heard they had these in those parts, but this was the first one I have seen.

Bump for any additional pictures that anyone can take this week. Its either this weekend Oct 25/26 or the next Nov 1/2 that I will be taking a stab at coming up. Appreciated.

I dont have photos but the color is starting to pop. This weekend will be good. Not sure about the weather but if I were picking I'd chose Nov 1/2 assuming you have good weather.

Good deal, I have settled on Nov 1/2 for my weekend trip. Bringing the motos, but if it rains well hit the trails for some hiking. Basing in Clarksville as always.

Quick Eureka Springs question. I have only been in that town one time and it was to get gas and then I continued on my route.

I have to ask, what is the appeal to this town.... Why is it so popular for events etc or motorcycle rallies???

Beware Hwy 374 which runs from 7 to 123...... The road has about a 1000feet of "loose gravel" marked accordingly. I ended up washing out the front end and going down in a 20mph sweeper a few turns later after it had turned back to full pavement. My guess is the gravel "powder soot" had gotten on the edges of my tire as we rode through and then when we took the corner the front tire washed out due to lack of grip. First time down in 21years of riding and logging 1000's of miles alone in Arkansas so seems like this really was a fluke incident.

Anyhow, the frame slider did its job, figure I will walk with about $200 in replaceable parts. I was able to ride it back with no problems. More sore from sliding across the pavement with my body and then my feet caught launching me into the air end over end till I hit the ground and rolled to a stop. The worst of it was my wife was directly behind me so she got to witness the whole thing, which scared her a great deal. This was in the last hour of our weekend ride, which pretty much sucked. So we carried on and in true sportbiker fashion I got back on that horse and carved into the corners of upper/lower 123 on the way back to Clarksville. :biglol

Outside of that, I had a wonderful trip checking out the colors. Additionally I was able to ride some new roads to me that I had always passed by, so it was a good trip for those reasons.

I have pictures if anyone is interested, of the trip and of the bike accident scene.
